Doug Smith

Doug Smith

Doug Smith was born to Scottish parents (his mother, Sheila, and his father, Bill) in Newfoundland, C Canada, where his (now-late) father was a pilot. He has one older brother, Bill, who is married to his sister-in-law, Doreen, and together they have two lovely daughters, his beautiful nieces Sara and Leanne. Doug was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. When he was born, his consultant told his parents that he would only live a very short time. How short? Between three and six months! After almost five decades, he is still alive. And he is not going anywhere… Unless it’s on a cruise ship, of course! Back in 2006, Doug was in a bad place. He had no job, no money, and no prospects. He decided to go back to college, not just to better himself but also to better his self-esteem, his qualifications, and his prospects of getting a job. He studied for an HNC (Higher National Certificate) in travel and tourism at Aberdeen College in the northeast of Scotland. After completing his HNC in 2007, Doug was very fortunate that he had the opportunity to work in the cruise industry. He worked for a major cruise company as a reservations cruise consultant. It involved selling cruise holidays for some fantastic cruise lines to travel agents and the general public alike. He also conducted cruise ship tours for groups of able- bodied guests, as well as those with disabilities, showing them around some of the magnificent ships when they were in port. More Info

My Hobbies Socialising with friends, meeting new people from different countries and cultures, driving, fly-fishing, going to concerts, eating in/out, and (of course) cruise holidays.

My inspirations My family, especially my late Father, who was a pilot in Newfoundland, Canada. He gave me these words of insporation… "Never give in. Set your goals, and go get them, irrespective of your disABILITY. Because he was a pilot, it was something I always wanted to do. I had the opportunity to apply for a scholarship to learn to fly with The British Disabled Flying Association (Now Aerobility). Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful in getting the scholarship, however, I don't give in that easily, and I will try again soon, when my health allows me to do so.

My message for this community  If there is something in life you want to do, don't stop at "I can't do it!" Yes, you can! This also applies to going on cruise holidays. Yes, you can! So, what are you waiting for? Go on! Get out there! Book a cruise holiday! See the world... or at least part of it... After all, it is YOUR world!!!

My creative work

The Dis“Ability” to Cruise?: Do you have a disability? Would you like to go on a cruise holiday but you think cruise ships are totally inaccessible? Try a cruise! You never know, you may even enjoy it! Doug Smith takes you on a journey from initially booking the cruise through arriving at the cruise terminal and boarding your cruise ship to what happens on board.
