Shawna N.M. Barnes

I enlisted in the US Army in 2007 and trained as a combat medic. I deployed to Iraq in 2009. Right around my seventh month in Iraq, my health took a drastic turn; I began having seizures. As a result, in 2011 I was medically retired out. Yes, I am a retired (yes, at 31), disabled Iraqi war veteran. It has been a downhill slide ever since with more health issues arising as time continues. While the doctors have not yet been able to nail down a diagnosis, I continue to strive and to push forward everyday with the love and support from family. No matter the situation encountered, I choose to always look for the silver linings, focusing on the negatives serves no purpose.
Unable to hold employment or successfully retrain/go back to school; I dove head first into the art of pottery. I have found a great therapy in ceramics upon my discharge from the military. My love of the arts has only helped to propel me forward, allowing me to excel in this artistic medium. About 2 years ago I transitioned into more sculptural work and am truly loving the new direction! It's been a HUGE push. Last year, I was accepted into my very first juried exhibit and had a sculpture on display for 3 months at the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, PA. I've recently just been invited (my first invitation to show at an exhibit!) to have 3 pieces on display at an upcoming exhibit this spring. More Info

My message for this community Don't allow what others may perceive as a limitation or disability stop you from achieving all your dreams. You may not be able to do it like everyone else does, but if it's a passion of yours I can guarantee that you will figure out a way to make it happen! I also want to encourage anyone with any kind of "disability" to change how you view yourself. For me, I do not see myself as disabled. I am DIFFERENTLY-ABLED. And I'd like to encourage everyone reading this to change their attitudes about those who may appear disabled - including yourself if that's you!

My creative work
