In 1998 he graduated in arts and design at the Exeter collage and the following year he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Plymouth. He graduated in 2004 and then earned his qualifications as a teacher. At 17, he was diagnosed with bone cancer, which made him undergo eleven months of chemotherapy, the amputation of his right leg and many years of rehabilitation. It is in this period that Lake’s interest in art turned into a real passion: looking for unconventional materials which do not require special studies for processing, Lake chose to use cardboard packaging as a means of expression for crafting sculptures. He understood that his choice of cardboard as a medium was also due to his desire to erase the boundaries between “high and low culture” and to make art accessible to all; therefore he began to teach courses and take lessons both in therapeutic communities and in schools and colleges, an activity he still continues in many cities (Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol). During his career he has won several awards since 2004 and has participated in numerous exhibitions, among which Love: 30 Obsessions (Plymouth, 2009) and Gold Run: Remix at Dalton Grove, London (2012).
His most recent commissions in 2015 include two figurative pieces (Butler/Bellboy) for Hotel Gotham, Manchester and a 6 metre high Totem Pole as part of the 5 Nations Rugby World Cup Parade, Exeter with Walk the Plank, now situated at Exeter Chiefs Rugby Ground. More Info
