Making a difference in the community for people with disabilities There are three core problems that BindiMaps solves for:
- Loneliness (feel shut off from the rest of the world)
- Loss of independence (require a guide when navigating any unfamiliar spaces)
- High cognitive load (constantly analysing their surroundings in order to navigate so their brain is being used to its capacity).
By using BindiMaps, people who are vision impaired are able to be connected with the rest of the world by consuming an equal level of information as normal-sighted people. Our software communicates information at a granular level. An example of this is communicating how the flush mechanism functions in a public restroom.
We restore a sense of independence in people’s lives by allowing them to confidently navigate through unfamiliar indoor spaces. By using the BindiMaps software, Nicole Holmes from Guide Dogs NSW was able to independently navigate her way through an unfamiliar building to a coffee shop for the first time in her life without the help of another human being.
BindiMaps reduces the amount of cognitive load on people who are vision impaired by adding an extra layer of information which is usually conveyed by a sighted guide. Therefore relieving the need to focus on sound, smell and touch to navigate.

Inspiration behind BindiMaps BindiMaps was conceptualised by co-founder and CEO, Dr Anna Wright. Dr Wright was diagnosed with a rare degenerative eye disorder whereby the doctor’s told her that it was a matter of time until she became blind. Dr Wright immediately started thinking how she would be able to navigate the world and provide for her children. After doing some research, Dr Wright decided that the most crucial aspect of daily life would be navigation. Dr Wright then teamed up with Mladen Jovanovic and Tony Burrett to create BindiMaps.

Who can benefit from BindiMaps BindiMaps was created with accessibility at the heart of the company. The software was built to be entirely accessible for people who are blind or vision impaired. Once the software was at a level where it was delivering immense value to the blind and vision impaired community, we shifted our focus to make it accessible for as many people as possible. BindiMaps now possesses features which can assist people in wheelchairs, people with dementia and alzheimers, people with all sight levels, and even sighted people for general indoor wayfinding.

Our message There is a rise in the number of social impact companies which are delivering immense value to people with disabilities and the less fortunate. BindiMaps is one of those companies. We couldn’t be more proud of the impact we are making in the world and will continue to grow and restore independence to as many people as possible. There are over 250 million people in the world who are living with some form of vision impairment and this number is only going up due to an ageing population - our plan is to help every single one of those people to seamlessly integrate into society. BindiMaps was created to restore a sense of independence in people’s lives and to allow everyone to live freely. BindiMaps is more than just a navigation app. BindiMaps is another step further towards equality.
