Making a difference in the community for people with disabilities We create theatre that is by Deaf for Deaf. We also create opportunity for Deaf talents, including actors, directors, designers, and technicians, to develop and show their work on and off-stage. Simultaneously, we create a theatre experience that is accessible to all audiences, Deaf and hearing. ALL!

Inspiration behind New York Deaf Theatre NYDT was founded by a group of Deaf actors and theatre artists back in 1979! The mission then, was to create a place for Deaf to see and participate in theatre making. Now in 2018, we're still fighting the idea of casting hearing actors in Deaf roles. We're hungry to develop and show Deaf arts in the theatre community. Today, we are still growing and reaching new audiences.

Who can benefit from New York Deaf Theatre EVERYONE! Our theatre experiences are intended for all audiences. Our productions often utilize a mix American Sign Language, Captions and Voice for accessibility. We create inclusion for Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Hearing audiences. Our productions are for anyone who wants to see the show in ASL, who wants to learn sign language, wants to be inspired by Deaf culture and understand their perspectives, and of course, for those who simply want to enjoy a show!

Our message We all are the same. Despite that a lot of people do not know being Deaf means being a part of Deaf culture as well. A lot of people are unware of who we are. Theatre is one of the ways to help increase awareness of our cultures stories, and further better humanity. We invite people in through the experience of theatre. From there, we'll see each other the same.
