Can you tell us more about your inspirational journey of becoming a teacher. Do you remember any incident that motivated you to choose this career path?B: Growing up, I just wanted to be treated like all the other kids....with respect. But that never happened. I was bullying by students and reprimanded by teachers. I had no friends. I hated school. But then one day my principal in middle school asked if we could educate all the students about Tourette Syndrome. I agreed. After we educated everyone after an orchestra concert, I received a standing ovation. It was at that moment that I realized the power of education. I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I wanted to be that teacher that I never had. I wanted to focus on the strengths of my students and celebrate their successes. I had a dream and I set out to accomplish that dream while never allowing my Tourette's to stand in my way. After I graduated from college, I had 24 principals say that could not hired me, mostly because of my Tourette's. But all it took was one principal to give me that chance when I was hired as a 2nd grade teacher.
What is the idea behind your book “Front of the Class: How Tourette Syndrome Made Me the Teacher I Never Had”?B: My book is a reminder for those with disabilities, weaknesses or challenges in life to never give up! It's a reminder to keep that positive attitude in order to follow your dreams. My book shows people that with the right support system in place, anyone can follow their dreams.
What is the main goal of the Brad Cohen Tourette Foundation?B: We started the Foundation to help raise money for kids who have Tourette Syndrome. So many times these kids think they are alone. They think they are battling TS all by themselves. We set out to help support kids through grants for summer camps, family weekend, advocacy groups, and putting on conferences to help gather those with TS and help educate all.
What challenges does our education system face for making schooling an inclusive experience for the kids? What is the best way to address these challenges?B: The biggest challenge in our school are the preconceived notions and stereotypes that adults bring to the classrooms. If everyone can be more open minded to the acceptance of students who are different, then out world and school systems would be a better place. We've gotten better, but we still have a long ways to go
Who is your inspiration?B: My inspiration comes from the fact that I don't ever want my Tourette Syndrome to win. This motivates me daily to go out and be the best I can be. Often times I notice that I can be better than the average people. It takes the right mindset and determination to make it happen.
What are your other hobbies?B: I love hanging out with my family, playing and watching sports and traveling.
What do you like to do when you are with your family/friends?B: I love being with my family and doing things as a group. I love everything from coaching my boys with their sports they play to going out to dinner with my wife and kids. It's all good.
What is your favorite place to visit? What do you like about that place?B: I love attending sporting events like baseball. Visiting a baseball stadium and watching the game of baseball is enjoyable. I love the game and I can feel free to tic as much as I want because I just blend in with all those who are screaming and cheering for the home team.
What tips/advice do you have for those in our community who want to become a teacher?B: Just Do It! Teaching is the greatest profession in the world. Those who want to teach have a passion for making a difference in the lives of children. Go out there and be the best teacher you can be. Don't be afraid to step outside the box and be that innovative and engaging teacher. Our students need teachers who bring that passion to their classroom daily.
Any special message for our community?B: If you are looking for a resource to use with your children/students to help stimulate dialogue about difference in life, then please consider my movie, Front of the Class. Often times the discussion that follows is rich and helps provide education and direction for those who need it. Also recently, my movie was remade in Bollywood titled, Hichki. I know these movies along with my book continue to inspire others and when I hear this happen, I sit back and say Mission Accomplished! Cheers!
