Setting a new era for inclusive fashion – A determined journey of a wheelchair model
“If you can dream it, you can do it.” - Walt Disney. Samanta faced a tragic incident at the age of fourteen when she became a paraplegic in an accidental shooting. Before this tragedy she was active in modelling and different sports. Her determination and optimism continued fulfilling her dream of becoming a professional model and is breaking the norms of fashion industry. Samanta takes part in many projects related to fashion and disability including Invacare, Wheelie-Chix Chic and London Fashion week – Fashion Scout. She is also involved as an ambassador for Models of diversity and Parallel London. Her interest for sports continued as a professional wheelchair tennis player. She proudly represented Brazil in three World Team Cups and won a doubles silver medal at the 2007 Para PanAm Games.
As a wheelchair model, what is the biggest challenge that you face in the fashion industry?S: Although it is slowly improving diversity has not been reflected in the fashion industry. Very few wheelchair users are used as models. Another significant barrier in the retail sector is the inaccessibility of many shops & stores.
How widely has inclusive fashion been adopted in the modelling world? What kind of response do you usually get during your speaking engagements?S: Inclusive fashion is starting to be adopted but it is not yet widespread. When I speak I get a lot of interest and usually surprise that the industry is not more inclusive.
What is your favorite modelling assignment to date and why?S: London Fashion Week. It was a dream for me made more exciting by the fact that I was modelling the range of a disabled designer- Louise Linderoth
Can you share your most memorable moment from wheelchair tennis? How did you train yourself after your accident?S: Winning a doubles silver medal with my partner, Rejane Candida, in the 2007 Para Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro. I started playing wheelchair tennis several years after my accident as I didn't know it existed. Once I discovered the sport I trained hard and played tournaments around the world.
How are you raising awareness for inclusion, fashion, and healthy lifestyles?S: Through my social media channels I promote inclusive fashion, inclusion in general and an active & healthy lifestyle. I eat well, exercise regularly and lead a very active life. I give talks and generally just spread the word.
Who is your inspiration?S: Oprah, Victoria Beckham, Esther Vergeer
What do you like to do when you are with your family/friends?S: I love to spend time with family and friends being active through a wide range of physical activities & sports. In addition to playing tennis I have tried most sports including archery, bowls/boccia, canoeing, cycling, golf, squash, table tennis and yoga. I use the gym regularly and swim. I like to prepare meals and enjoy exploring new healthy restaurants & cafes.
What are your other hobbies?S: I like to do a range of things - spending time outside, visiting parks, travelling and going to cinema. I also love to take pictures and have my picture taken.
