A gifted fashion designer leveraging autism strengths into elegant clothing
“What might seem to be a limitation can be turned into a strength.” – Michael, the founder and executive creator of the clothing company Andolsek has exceled in the fashion world by pouring all his energy into his creative strengths for introducing elegant modern fashions. It is no wonder Michael was selected to work with master draper Cecile Pelous, of Christian Dior and Nina Ricci fame and was also accepted to study at the prestigious École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. His company has taken a great initiative by providing employment opportunities to individuals with ASD.
What/who inspired you to become a fashion designer? What is the biggest challenge for a person with autism in this industry?M: In high school, I would sit out during gym to look at Vogue magazines. The advertisements in them inspired me.
I think that probably the individual challenges that come with having autism can make working in any industry difficult at times. For me socialization is difficult, so networking and putting myself out there is a challenge. I also have many sensitivities to what’s going on around me, such as; lighting, noise, and smells. Finding the right work environment can be challenging.
How do your designs give a different perspective in the fashion world? How does autism help you with your skills?M: I think that most designers’ creativeness and ingenuity offer different perspectives in this field, including my own. Having autism has it’s advantages and disadvantages, but I feel that my intense ability to focus, my attention to every little detail, and my need to be precise and accurate have been strengths in my work.
Can you tell us about your day to day activities as the company’s founder and executive creator of Andolsek?M: To start, I am more nocturnal, so my day starts later than most people. My day to day activities vary. I can be found doing web design, training employees, sewing, pattern making, designing, creating, and dreaming. I do try to find as much solitude while working as possible.
Which activity/skill from your school days is helping you with your current position/company?M: I’m not sure that I can narrow it down to any one skill or activity in particular. Pretty much everything that I’ve learned has been helpful, because each school and teacher has had a different emphasis. I have acquired a variety of skills during my school days that I use on a regular basis.
Who is your favorite designer? Which of his/her work has influenced you the most?M: I admire the work of so many designers, it’s difficult to pick a favorite. I really appreciate the designs of Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, John Galliano, and Alexis Mabille, to name a few.
How do you usually keep a balance between your personal and professional life?M: I don’t. It’s all merged together for me. It’s difficult for me to compartmentalize the one from the other. Every aspect of my life is attached to another aspect of my life.
What is your favorite place to visit? What do you love about that place?M: I don’t go to many places, but when I do, I like gardens and museums. I don’t like huge crowds, they’re more controlled environments, and I appreciate art and beauty.
What are your other hobbies?M: I enjoy spending time playing the piano and working on other creative projects, like decorating and painting.
What advice do you have for those in our community who are interested in becoming a fashion designer?M: Try and find local design programs in your area, and look for people that can mentor you through the process. Learn as much about the industry as you can, which will help you realize what exactly you want to do. I think that you should find what you love to do and continue to practice to strengthen those skills.
Any special message for our community?M: Everyone, no matter who you are, has strengths and weaknesses. What might seem to be a limitation can be turned into a strength. Don’t let limitations hold you back, and don’t get discouraged. Everyone has something to contribute.
