Andy Grant Interview

The compelling journey of a former Royal Marines Commando and the world’s fastest single leg amputee over 10 KM

Andy joined the Royal Marines at age seventeen. His challenging journey to redefine himself after losing a leg while patrolling in Afghanistan is a life lesson for all of us. After his discharge from the Royal Marines Andy embarked on many adventurous challenges such as climbing some of the world’s tallest mountains, learning to surf and ski and finally, running where he claimed the title of the world’s fastest single leg amputee with a 10km time of 37:17. Andy derives from his life experiences as a motivational speaker to help unlock the hidden potential in his audiences. He has authored a book called “You’ll Never Walk” which delivers his life’s message that anything is possible. Andy also serves as an ambassador for charities such as Help for Heroes and School of Hard Knocks and has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement prize at the Pride of Liverpool Awards.

What challenges did you face transitioning from being a royal marine commando to a star athlete?A: I found the only real challenge was learning to walk and run again. The physical training and mental strength required to break the 10km was already there from the Marines, it was just a case of learning to do it with a running blade.

Who can benefit from your book "You'll Never Walk"?A: Everyone! My life has been a rollercoaster and is hopefully an enjoyable read for anyone who picks it up and by the end hopefully people will realise that in life anything is possible.

What topics do you address in your keynote presentations?A: Overcoming adversity, mental strength, team work, resilience.

Which is your most memorable adventure so far and why?A: Running 10km as a single leg amputee was by far my most memorable experience. I have been on some pretty cool adentures around the world but simply running 25 laps of a running track in 37:17 meant to much to me.

What are your other hobbies?A: I love the gym. I am in there 5 times a week, boxing and lifting weights. I love long walks with my dog also.

What is your favorite place to visit? What do you love about that place?A: I recently got to visit New Zealand and thats the best country I have visited. It was an adrenaline junkies like myself paradise.

What is your suggestion for families of children with disabilities to empower their children?A: Treat them exactly as you would any one else. Don't make a fuss out of someone. Most of the time the person in question will be able to do the sport but just in a different way. A little bit of adapting and overcoming the problem and you will be surprised

What tips/advice do you have for those in our community who want to overcome adversity?A: The adversities that we face ofter tend to be the making of us. So my advice would be embrace what ever challenges come your way.
