At what age did you decide to choose comedy as your profession and why? How did your comic career change after winning NBC’s Last Comic Standing?J: I don’t really think I’ve reached that age yet, I somehow just grew into being a comedian my whole life so far. My life got completely flipped around after winning LCS. After LCS, I spend all my time travelling around the world performing at events and continuing to be a comedian.
How do people’s perceptions about disabilities change after watching your show?J: People’s perceptions definitely change after seeing my show. They realize that disabled people are really just the same as everyone else.
What kind of work is involved in keeping up with audience expectations and competition? How often do you need to research for new topics?J: I wouldn’t say I do any research. I’m constantly writing new material for myself more than anything. I don’t really look at comedy like a competition; I have a unique fan base and style so I’m just trying to focus on doing everything to the best of my own abilities.
Can you tell us more about your TV show “Comedy Central Presents: Josh Blue”?J: That is my Comedy Central comedy special from 2009. If you would like to see my most current special, check out “Sticky Change” with Josh Blue on Hulu and Netflix.
How do you feel when you get so much appreciation for your talent? Does it change you as a person? What keeps you grounded? Who inspires you the most?J: Nature and gravity really keep me grounded. Honestly, I couldn’t keep doing comedy if I wasn’t true to myself. People appreciate my jokes because they’re honest and real, I’m just lucky that people do enjoy them.
Can you tell us about your experience as a member of the US Paralympic Soccer Team?J: It was fun! It was an amazing experience to travel all over the world and be part of a team of other disabled folks. It was totally life-changing learning how to become comfortable with my disability and see what other people with disabilities were able to accomplish.
In order of importance, could you prioritize the following: Wealth, Fame, Health, and Family and why?J: Family is always first. Health is always important as well, you can’t really take care of your family if you’re not taking care of yourself as well. The last two aren’t important at all.
What are your other hobbies?J: I like throwing knives and being out in the mountains. I also create sculptures. Just being outside and in nature is my real passion.
What will be your advice for our special children who are interested in pursuing comedy as their profession?J: Just be your best self and follow your heart!
Any special message for our community?J: I believe anyone can do what they want to, you just have to put in the work!
