Can you tell us about your journey as a dancer? What is your favorite dance style?T: There is something fascinating to me in Ballet, there is a lot of discipline that is required for your mind and your body. It is not easy at all. There are time's where I would get so upset because my body is not cooperating for that particular day. It looks beautiful and graceful but in reality it is the most physically and mentally difficult thing to do.
What is more fun, dancing or stage managing and why?T: They are both fun and stressful. There is that sense of euphoria when performing on stage and bonding with your fellow company members backstage. there is also a sense of achievement while stage managing a show when you call all the light and sound cues perfectly.
What was your most memorable moment from “So You Think You Can Dance”?T: That experience was such a blur haha...the whole thing was completely unexpected and so last minute. One thing is it was the coldest day that day and they told us we had to change outside in the street because there was too many of us and not enough time or space for us to change. So we had to change in the middle of the coldest winter in the street haha
Which dance performance is closest to your heart and why?T: It was I was a teenager with Julie Ann Miranda and we did Riverdance. It was the most difficult exhausting piece I had ever done but I fell in love with it and would love to do it again.
Who is your favorite dancer? Which of his/her performances do you like the most and why?T: I don’t actually have one
What challenges did you face during your school days? What or who motivated you to face those challenges?T: I did not have a lot of bad experiences during my school days. In fact it was a pretty normal time, I had friends I was popular. My challenges were more from the adults in the school. They didn't want me to join the school band or go on senior trips or be in regular gym class. Adults were the ones who tried to limit me.
My mom did not like that and so she fought for my rights to at least be able to try it first. With that I was in the school band and became the head flautist, I was able to attend my senior trips, it was great. I fell in love with my instrument and loved being in the school band.
Who is your inspiration?T: My inspiration is more in terms of proving people wrong. Showing the world to not underestimate me because of my disability. That is what drives me to succeed and reach higher.
What do you like to do when you are with your family/friends?T: I just enjoy spending time with my family and friends, going out laughing joking around. This are the best times.
What tips/advice do you have for those in our community who want to learn dance?T: Take classes and try it out. I always like to try things first before I say I can't do it. You give a try first that way you yourself can say "hey at least I tried it". Go take a dance class and see how you like it, how your body feels, take it a class at a time and you will see that you will improve. It won't be easy but it is certainly possible.
Any special message for our community?T: Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, You are the only one that can decide for yourself what you can and cannot do. Always try new things and never let anyone put doubt in your mind. Always reach for the impossible beacause it can become possible. We are important, we matter.
