Can you tell us about your journey to becoming a MMA fighter? What has been the toughest challenge you encountered during this journey?G:
It’s been an amazing journey so far. I’m lucky to be able to train with great coaches at Rock MMA. I can’t put it into words – I have been able to go so many places and meet so many people because of MMA.
Getting my first “sanctioned fight”. Once we accomplished that 3 years ago - it’s been awesome since!
Which one of your achievements is closest to you heart and why?G: Winning the Gateway Fighting Series Bantamweight Championship Belt this year. I very proud of my pioneering efforts in MMA for adaptive athletes.
What is the idea behind Garrett's Fight Foundation?G: We fight for fitness for those that have cognitive and physical limitations. We train and coach others with special needs in functional fitness and Martial Arts.
What activities did you enjoy during your school days?G: Basketball, Rapping – but that was a long time ago.
Who is your inspiration?G: I’m inspired by the adaptive athletes I see across the world. What some of these veterans and others overcome is amazing and inspires me.
How has your family supported you in your interests and challenges? How do you like to spent time with your family?G: My family has always been there for me – more than anything else they always have told me I can do anything I want to!
My pops is my coach for strength and conditioning so we spend a lot of time training and hanging out at the gym together.
What are your other hobbies?G: Video games, movies and I’m trying to write my own screen play!
What is your favorite place to visit? What do you like about that place?G: I liked London – to cool to travel to another country. I liked all the real old buildings and the Castle’s all the old history.
How has being a MMA fighter helped you personally and how can it help other special needs kids?G: MMA has given me self-confidence and self-esteem – I’ve made so many friends from training MMA. It’s also shown how to be a good coach to other athletes. MMA has given me a chance to show and prove to everybody that having Down syndrome shouldn’t limit anyone. MMA has given me a sense of community.
It helps kids with special needs in so many ways builds self-esteem and self-confidence, get in better shape, defend themselves so they can feel safe and have lots of fun and make friends.
>Any special message for our community?G: Our message is that you can do it – a healthy fit life is something everybody can do – don’t let anybody stop you from chasing your dreams. If you need help with your training then please contact us –we are here to me your coach and help you succeed.
