“Different does not mean bad” – an awesome message by talented artist with autism
For Erika art has provided the perfect channel for expression and has also become a career of this charismatic artist. When she was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 21 she confidently defined her own path in life via her passion for art. Her simplicity of using different mediums can be observed in her varied and wonderful work. We applaud Erika for her incredible talent.
What do you love about art? What is your favorite art medium?E:
My favorite thing about art is that it can never be wrong. There are absolute answers in math and science, but not in art. There are rules and guidelines, but they don't have to be followed if you don't want to. Art is entirely subjective in that way and gives freedom that other disciplines don't.
I dabble in nearly all mediums; charcoal, pastels, photography, clay, digital art. Painting will always be my first love, especially acrylic. I like the boldness and brightness of the colors and how easy it is to work with.
What is your favorite creation so far?E: That's a tough one. I love all of my work, even the work I deem to be “bad art” because it's all a part of me. If I have to pick just one, I'd pick “The Wisest Sun”, a painting I did back in 2015. I love the relationship between the gray tones and the pops of orange and yellow. It's also one of my technically stronger pieces. It's hanging in my den right now, I always stop for a moment to admire it when I'm in there!
What are your other hobbies?E: Aside from art, I'm a huge video game nerd. I also enjoy spending time with my pets, going for long walks, exploring antique shops and retro video game stores, and reading! My favorite author right now is Emma Donoghue.
What is your favorite place to visit and why?E: I love the Pacific Northwest, where I've lived on and off for 6 of the past 12 years. Being so close to nature and the city at the same time is amazing. There's also a love of creatives there that I haven't found anywhere else. My dream is to one day move to Portland.
What do you like to do when you are with your friends/family?E: My boyfriend and I like going for car rides, where we discuss politics, social situations, and everything else under the sun. We also like spending time playing with our family's three dogs. They're an eclectic bunch. My 7 year old Newfoundland Ziva is my best friend!!
Any special message for our community?E:
Parents and teachers, remember that different does not mean bad. Your neurodiverse child doesn't fit the mold, and that is something to be celebrated! They will find their way, and the best thing you can do for them is to encourage their interests and talents.
Kids, don't let anyone tell you your interests or dreams are dumb or impossible. They're not. When you find your passion, grab onto it, and go for it. Also, don't compare yourself to others. Your talents are special to you. Nobody else can do what you do.
