Bricharne Hastie Interview

Young gifted artist with autism exploring art in a variety of mediums

Introduction authored by Angela, Bricharne's art tutor.
"March 2017. For a little over the past year, I have held the position of art tutor for Bricharne. It is a genuine privilege to witness and assist with her creative work. Bricharne often surprises me with her non-conventional approach to creating visual art. Her use of materials, her rendering of theme, her intuitive practice and gentle groove with how she embodies enjoyment, are each aspects that I admire in Bricharne, and hold a particular respect for in any art practice where the value of leisure can slip. Head strong and unique, Bricharne knows what she enjoys doing, and approaches art-making sessions with forthright confidence and pleasure. Her visual gifts, as I see them, are inherently compositional; acknowledging form and colour, with an awareness of materiality often revealed by her product. My role, as Bricharne’s tutor, is to remain conspicuously uninvolved - outside her artistic process, while catching these dynamics in play. I hope others enjoy viewing these lively works as much as Bricharne enjoyed creating them." - Angela.
We are proud of Bricharne for her outstanding talent and artistic work. Jan, her mom, has answered on Bricharne's behalf.

The interview with Bricharne Hastie was conducted by Uplifting Voices in May 2017. More Info

She now has an art lecturer who comes once a week where she can experiment with art in a variety of mediums. Between 200-300 paintings and artefact pieces.

What is your favorite creation so far?B: Favorite piece is from Bricharne’s latest art exhibition at the Rotorua Village Arts Centre, in Rotorua New Zealand.

What are your other hobbies?B: Bricharne loves to listen to music. She loves to dance and sometimes she will sing her favourite songs. Her favourite movies are Nemo, Toy Story and Sherk. Her favourite musician is Jimmy Barnes.

What is your favorite place to visit?B: Bricharne loves to visit the beach. She likes the ocean and the waves.

What do you like to do with your family and friends?B: Toasting marshmallow’s in the front yard.

Any special message for our community?B: Bricharne’s strengths in art has been a way for her to communicate with her family and with the wider community. Through art Bricharne has continued to develop her communication skills and has control over what she does in terms of the types and colours of the art mediums that she uses. Most of all, she is extremely proud of her work. She often shows me her work with the art lecturer and says “perfect” which means she is really pleased with what she has done.
