“Differences are what shape the world” – strong message from an admirable young tennis player with prosthetic arm
Strong determination and a great support system can contribute in overcoming challenges. Nisha, who born without the lower part of her right arm, has achieved excellence in tennis with her resilient will and the strong support of her parents. She is on the varsity women’s tennis team at RPI and has competed in many tournaments for USTA. Nisha has passionately organized a charity tennis tournament with proceeds going to Shriners Hospitals for Children. We are proud of Nisha for her great attitude, for overcoming her adversity and achieving excellence in tennis.
How did you get interested in tennis? What challenges do you face while playing tennis?N: I originally started playing tennis because of the interest that my parents had. At the time, I was trying out many sports and I wanted to try tennis. It seemed like something I could do with my arm. While playing tennis, the biggest challenge was learning a backhand, however I have gotten used to it. It isn't a challenge to me anymore.
How many Tennis Tournament have you participated in so far? Which one is the most memorable?N: I have competed in many tournaments for USTA. The most memorable tournament would be my Charity Tennis Tournament with proceeds going to Shriners Hospitals for Children. I have organized it for the past 4 years and have had various memories that have all held such an important place in my heart. The best memory from each tournament would be how excited and grateful the hospital was to receive the donation.
What are your other hobbies?N: One of my other favorite hobbies is dancing. When I was younger, I would always dance around the house. I also learned the Indian classical dance, BarathNatyam. And in high school, I was in dance club for three years.
What is your favorite place to visit and why?N: My favorite place to visit is Barcelona. I have only been there once, however, I loved the culture and people when I went there. There were always fun activities to do and I loved walking down Las Ramblas. I definitely want to go back one day.
What do you like to do when you are with your friends/family?N: When I am with my friends and family I love to relax and enjoy their company. I like to go out and try new restaurants and get dressed up and take pictures. My mom and my friends love to go shopping as well so that is something I enjoy doing.
Do you have any special message for our community?N: I think Inspiration Matters is a great organization. Every person is creative in their own way and it is important to show people that differences are what shape the world. I have overcome my adversity and I want other people to know that if you put your mind to it, anything can be achieved.
