8 year old dyslexic kid’s fabulous dream to become the youngest winner of the Indy 500
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams - Eleanor Roosevelt.” Elliot, who is 8 year old, has a dream to become the youngest winner of the Indy 500. He has already started working towards his goal since the age of five when he began driving kart. In his brief Kid Kart career, he amassed an amazing 25 feature wins, 24 heat race first place finishes, set the pole 26 times, had 55 top 5 finishes, and 61 top 10 finishes in 64 races. He is proudly racing to raise awareness for Alex’s Lemonade Stand (a foundation for childhood cancer) and the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana. Other than racing, Elliot also excels in school and is a straight A student. We are proud of Elliot hard work, dedication, and brilliant accomplishments that he has achieved in such young age. Elliot is setting a wonderful example for this community.
What do you like about kart racing? What was your first race?E: My favorite things about kart racing are going fast and winning! My first race was when I was 5 years old at a small track about 15 minutes from my house. I did a pretty good job, and then I was hooked!
What kind of training do you need to take as a kart racer?E: To learn to race, you pretty much just have to get in a kart and start driving until you get the feel for it. I have worked with several coaches, and I also work on a simulator at a place called Racecraft1.
Did you ever get scared when you were racing?E: I don't really ever get scared, but I can remember being afraid once at Kid Kart Nationals. Another drivers flipped his kart over on top of mine, and that freaked me out!
Do you practice every day? If yes how long do you practice?E: I don't practice every day, because the track is close to an hour from my home, and it gets cold here in winter, so I can't drive in the winter. When it's warm enough, I either practice or race pretty much every weekend. When we go to practice, we get there when the track opens at 10 am and stay until it closes at 7 pm. It takes lots of time to get the kart tuned in just right and find the fastest racing line.
who is your favorite race car driver?E: My favorite driver was Justin Wilson. He had Dyslexia like me, and he was my hero. Now I cheer for his brother, Stefan Wilson and Scott Dixon.
What are your other hobbies?E: My other hobbies are weatching Indycar races, playing basketball, video games, hunting and fishing.
What is your favorite place to visit?E: My favorite places I've visited are Hawaii and Disney. My favorite place to race is USAIR Motorsports Park in Shawano, WI.
What do you like to do when you are with your friends?E: When I'm with my friends I like to play sports, play video games, and talk about racing.
What is your favorite dessert?E: My favorite dessert is any kind of candy.
Any special message for our community?E: I have Dyslexia, but I don't let it stop me. I think it helps me to be a better racer. If you have something about you that is different like I do, don't let it stop you from your dreams!
