“Would I be so interesting if I did not have autism?” – a determined young founder of “Bike Dr. Derek”
Derek’s passion for bikes has encouraged him to start his own full-service bicycle repair shop. With a limited ability to speak and having epilepsy, he took charge to determine his future with responsibility and invested time in an activity that he loves. With the help of his team and mentor, Derek has successfully launched his business, “Bike Dr. Derek”. He donates a portion of his profits to help others to Disability Rights International, a non-profit that is dedicated to promoting the human rights and full participation in society of people with disabilities worldwide.
Can you tell us how you got the idea to found “Bike Dr. Derek”? How has your family supported you?D: I think that I really enjoy the details of working on bicycles. Understand that it makes little sense to others that someone like me can have their own business. I wanted to do what I know I am capable of doing.
My favorite thing about starting my business is mostly learning who believes in me. My family helped me form my team.
Can you tell us about the day-to-day challenges with your bike repair operation?D: Balancing to get new customers but not more than I can handle.
What is the best thing you love about your entrepreneurship?D: That someone else does not determine my future.
What challenges did you face during your school years? How did you face these challenges?D: My difficulty expressing my thinking. Think it is still a challenge, but my favorite good team members help me communicate.
What are your other hobbies?D: Listening to music and I like to watch movies.
What do you like to do when you are with your family/friends?D: I enjoy really going on trips, going to stores, going on walks and riding bicycles.
Can you give tips/advice for those in our community who want to overcome challenges?D: My advice is that you spend time with people that think good things are possible for you.
Any special message for our community?D: Would I be so interesting if I did not have autism? Focus on the positive.
