“Don't give up because I encourage you, to keep on the bright side of life.” – a gifted pianist with Down syndrome
Grace started learning the piano at an early age of six with a teacher but had limited progress. At age ten, her mother Monica Kwan took over and encouraged Grace by developing a special method of teaching piano. Today Grace shares her talent by playing the piano at various local concerts, church events and on social media. Grace also uses her creativity to run her own handmade card business. She generously donates 20% of the profits from her business to Tutti Arts, a non-profit serving people with disabilities through an art and music program.
When and how did you start playing the piano?G: I started learning the piano with a piano teacher, and I was only 6 years old. I couldn't learn much from her because her method did not work for me. When I was 10 years old, my mum took over teaching me the piano. She developed a special method for me, and since then I have learned many songs and played at school talent quest, church and local concerts.
How do you learn to play a new song? Which is your favorite song to play?G: I choose a new song I want to play, and my mother has to adapt the song that I like, and use colour codes to adapt to my way of playing. I would have a look in all the piano books for a song that comes to my mind then I would show my mum the song I choose, and my mum would have a go at playing it to see if it is, doable for me to play. And my favourite song to play is Heal the world, and Titanic and all the Phantom of the Opera songs.
What challenges did you face during your school years? How did you face these challenges?G: My Main challenge is my vision. Because I could not see well and I could not hear well, it takes me a lot longer to response to people. Sometimes people will assume I did not understand them and move on, but I was just trying to gather my thoughts to get an answer. I use hearing aids to help with my hearing and a visual aid for my reading and a Long cane to get around.
Who is your favorite musician? Which if his/her qualities do you admire the most?G: I admire Andrew Lloyd Webber because he composed the songs for Phantom of the opera. They are very powerful songs. The reason I admire Andy Grammar is because he is a song-writer for the Five feet apart, and I like the movie.
What are your other hobbies?G: I Enjoy swimming, and dancing and writing stories, also I enjoy playing piano, and running around with my puppy. And Watching trailers of movies and musicals.
I also enjoy making cards, and candles. I get the card ideas form beautiful photos from the internet, and ink them onto cards. I have a small handmade cards and candle business and I am proud of it.
What do you like to do when you are with your family/friends?G: I like to go for walks with family, also playing Scrabbles and Munchkins (boardgames). With friends I like to, tell jokes and go wondering around with them.
What is your favorite place to visit? What do you love about that place?G: I definitely think Hong Kong is one of the places I love to visit, because I liked Ocean Park and visiting Nana and Grandpa. I like visiting, my Grand Aunties card shop too. My second favourite place I love to visit is Japan because I loved to go Skiing on the snow, and doing snow ball fights and make snow mans. I managed to ski down the baby slope.
Any special message for our community?G: If something is hard, don't give up, keep going. And stay calm when something is hard, and keep trying. Keep in mind that anything is possible. And try and remember to think positive, and remember don't give up because I encourage you, to keep on the bright side of life.
