“Don't let autism stop you from achieving your dreams.” – a gifted self-employed artist and organic farmer
Donico was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. His artistic creativity sparked when he was introduced to making clay figures in an elementary school art class. Today Donico is making wonderful toy figures using pipe cleaners and selling these on Facebook and at local events. Other than making creative things out of his imagination, he loves to assist his grandmother at her organic farm. Donico has honored his favorite celebrities like Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze and many more by creating amazing pipe cleaner figures in their likeness.
How and when did you start making pipe cleaner figures?D: As a boy, I started with clay, garbage twist ties and aluminum foil before pipe cleaners. I taught myself these skills when I was into toys as a kid. They are what inspired me to create my own line of work, and I have a whole roomful of my fantastic works of art. Though I was very young and had no experience, I had to learn the basics on my own. And then as an adult, I wanted to go into professional. I had to change the transitions in my work. I wanted to be somebody that the entire world could look up to. I'm an artistic cadet in basic learning first, and a professional artist second.
Which is your own favorite creation so far and why?D: My favorite creation is Michael Jackson. When he died in 2009, I wanted to honor him in some way. In January 2018, I figured out the solution. I constructed 60 pipe cleaner figures from every era of the King of Pop. My success in making these figures gained so much recognition, my career landed on newspapers and national television. I also honored Stan Lee by making every superhero he brought into the world. If it wasn't for my creative mind and enthusiasm, my idols would not be remembered through my creativity.
How do you split your time between your art and working at your grandmother’s organic farm?D: Though I live with my grandmother, taking care of the farm is a very tough and a hard life. I'm very good at taking care of my animals and protecting them by any means. We work on our hands and feet planting flowers, fruits and vegetables. We have 22 and a half acres of land. I manage to finish my farm work first and then do my artwork.
What challenges did you face during your school years? How did you face these challenges?D: Throughout my years of going to the best schools, I had to deal with a lot. I was nonverbal at both home and school. I spoke when I was only 4 years old. I sometimes distanced myself from other kids. I was also a target of constant bullying. I don't like those type of people pick on people who are different from them. I had to stand up for myself and others.
What are your other hobbies?D: I have many hobbies than just art. I love cooking, playing video games, reading books, writing, math, riding bikes, listening to music, acting, and being myself is one of my best qualities.
What do you like to do when you are with your family/friends?D: When I am with family, I enjoy helping out because I know they can't get anything done without me. And when I am not with my family, I sometimes like to kick back with my friends in the world or chat with them on social media. I enjoy having everyone close to me because it's important to have the best people in your life.
What is your favorite place to visit? What do you love about that place?D: My favorite place in the world is going to amusement parks because I want to get out and have the fun in the world. I want to fit in every aspect in the whole world and I want to share my hopes and dreams with everyone.
Any special message for our community?D: Don't let autism stop you from achieving your dreams. You find an opportunity by looking within yourself. Turn disability into an ability you believe is right for you. And remember, this powerful opportunity can be your own.
