“Include people with disabilities, we are awesome people” – a determined entrepreneur with Down syndrome stepping firmly towards providing an inclusive workforce
Gabi’s dream of opening her own coffee shop and promoting inclusive employment took shape when she found it difficult to find a job after high school. Her mom Mary Angelini has been providing unwavering support to turn Gabi’s coffee shop dream into a reality. Gabi is raising and saving money for a coffee shop where she can hire people with disabilities to promote an inclusive community. Currently, she is selling her own coffee blend called "Gabi's Grounds" at her online store. Gabi also enjoys participating in the Special Olympics.
What inspires you to start Gabi’s Grounds coffee shop?G: I always wanted to open a restaurant and had trouble finding a job after graduating high school. Nobody would hire me because they said I would be too slow at the job. My mom and I decided to open a coffee shop instead so we can employ my friends with disabilities.
What do you love about running your own business?G: I love working with my mom, we have fun going to down syndrome conferences and selling my coffee. I love doing pop up events all over and we meet nice people who support my business.
What challenges did you face during your school years? How did you face these challenges?G: Being bullied. Not being included in other peoples lives. No friends.
I asked my teachers and my mom to help and listening to music also. I joined the special needs cheer team and I got lots of attention at the games and competitions. I can do a one handed cartwheel and the crowds loved it and gave me a standing ovation.
What are your other hobbies?G: break dance, gymnastics, basketball, skiing, singing, would love to model
What do you like to do when you are with your family/friends?G: Slumber parties and hanging out with friends and I like when my family gets together for holiday traditions and big family meals. Baking cookies with my mom and sister in laws. Love when my boyfriend from Ohio, Nick Doyle visits. Our surprise airport reunion has gotten over 3 million hits. I like reading the comments. What is your suggestion for parents/families to empower children with disabilities?G: To let their child follow their dreams.
Can you give tips/advice for those in our community who want to join the workforce?G: They should come and work in my shop when we open. If they keep applying at the job they want and not give up. Keep working hard and go for it.
Any special message for our community?G: Include people with disabilities, we are awesome people
