Blake was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. Art therapy not only helped him to express his thoughts but also his own perspective of the world. His formal training began at the Arc of High Point and he continues to take lessons here. With over fifteen years of experience, Blake loves to paint animals the most and is famous for the imaginative expressions he gives the animals. He also has a special connection with St. John (U.S. Virgin Islands) which began with him painting images of the island from photos his mother had taken and from his trips to the island. Since then Blake has made multiple donations from the sale of his St. John inspired art to help rebuild schools after hurricanes devastated the small island. Proceeds from his art also benefit The Arc of High Point’s creative arts program. Blake’s art is also sold through retailers like Lowes, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Home Depot and others. His mom Leann, who herself is an artist, is actively helping Blake to explore his creativity.

What role does art play in your life?B: Art is a big fun part of my life and I enjoy painting with my teachers twice a week.

Which is your own favorite creation? How long did it take you to finish that creation?B:  They are all my favorite until I finish the next one and then it becomes my new favorite. It takes me about 3-4 hours for each creation which are usually 16x20 or larger.

What are your other hobbies?B: I like to participate in special Olympics in roller skating and bowling. I also like to volunteer in my community to help others and collect Disney movies and books.

What do you like to do when you are with your family/friends?B: I like to go to the lake and ride behind the boat in an inner tube in the summer. I also like to ride on the back of my friend's motorcycle. I like to do things that scare my mother! I also like to go to the movies and out to eat dinner.

What is your favorite place to visit?B: My favorite place to visit is universal studios theme park in Florida and St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands to swim with the sea turtles which is something I like to take photos of and paint.

Any special message for our community?B: Never let anyone tell you that you cannot do something. Just give it your best try and you might surprise them.
