Alfie Bennett Interview

“I am autistic and proud.” – A melodious journey of a 12-year-old gifted musician

Alfie’s passionate musical journey began when he started learning piano at age eight and quickly adopted to guitar when he was just ten years old. He became an Internet sensation while playing the piano at Birmingham New Street Station in the United Kingdom. Alfie’s parents encourage and support his talent. He promotes his talent via his YouTube channel and as well as on his Twitter account. Alfie decides songs he should learn next based on voting by his social media followers. Once he learns the song, he performs and uploads them to social media. We are proud of Alfie’s talent and his sincere work.

The interview with Alfie Bennett was conducted by Uplifting Voices in October 2019. More Info

When and how did you start playing the piano and guitar?A: I started playing the piano when I was 9 years old just because I was interested and to see if I could learn it and I really loved Beethoven’s & Chopin’s music so much so that made me want to learn piano. I decided to learn guitar when I was 10 because I really love rock music and once I picked up a guitar to learn it came really quickly and it’s safe to say I have a quite intense interest in guitars particularly electric guitars and know a fair few facts about certain ones and ones musicians play etc.

How long does it take for you to learn a new song?A: It depends on the complexity of the song for piano as bohemian rhapsody took me long to learn as it’s such a long song and there’s such a broad range of tempos and keys but last week I learnt rocketman by Elton John in 5 days so it depends on what songs I want to learn. Guitar songs are much quicker to learn I find it easy to learn songs on guitar and it would take maybe a day or 2 to learn a song on guitar (maybe less?)

How are you using social media to promote your talent?A: I currently have a twitter account to put some clips of songs on there and I do polls for people to vote which song I should learn next. I also have a YouTube channel called ‘Alfie Bennett’s music’ and I upload piano and guitar videos every week.

Who is your favorite musician? Which if his/her qualities do you admire the most?A: I have so many favourite musicians it will be hard to narrow down but some of my absolute favourites are Queen, Metallica, Elton John, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Motörhead, Green Day & Pink Floyd. I really admire the songwriting of them all especially Freddie Mercury & Elton John! Metallica have made some of the best rock songs ever & I love the guitar solos & music they wrote, along with AC/DC, Motörhead, Green day & Pink floyd! And Jimi Hendrix is the original greatest of all time guitarist. The Beatles have the best songs which never get old and John Lennon & Paul McCartney are fantastic songwriters.

What are your other hobbies?A: I just love music and playing music every day. And also watching horror movies too.

What do you like to do when you are with your family/friends?A: I like to talk about music and bands and I play with my little sister Teddie who is 2 and I like to go and support my other little sister Tayla who is 9 as she plays football for a girls football team at weekends.

What is your favorite place to visit? What do you love about that place?A: I love to go and visit a music shop in my town centre called PMT (professional music technology) and I spend so long in there playing all of the different guitars and pianos and also making tips for what to ask for my birthday and Christmas gifts! They have hundreds of guitars and I could spend all day long in there.

Can you give tips/advice for those in our community who want to learn piano/guitar?A: Take your time and practice, always make sure you do hand exercises and stretches and if you get to a really tricky part which stresses you out, then take a break and come back to it. Never give up!

Any special message for our community?A: I am proud that I am raising awareness for the autism community. Everyone should get to know people with autism and see that we make the greatest friends. I am autistic and proud.
